New Arrival: Rhetoric 20yr Bourbon!

Howdy friend-o,

The highly anticipated third release from the Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co. has finally hit our shelves!  Much like its brother Barterhouse (released earlier this year), Rhetoric sports a 20 year age statement.  However, while Barterhouse was distilled solely at the new Bernheim distillery, Rhetoric’s juice came from both the new and old Bernheim distilleries, meaning it could contain some stock older than 20 years.  Another noticeable difference between the two is where they were aged; while both matured in the Stitzel-Weller warehouse, Rhetoric was situated in the lower levels, which often leads to a softer profile.

As the label states, Rhetoric will be “an evolving exploration in bourbon maturation.”  Over the course of six years, each bottling will get progressively older (2015’s release will be 21 years old, 2016’s release will be 22 years old, and so on).  Supposedly the label will get increasingly darker to symbolize the older age, which sounds pretty neat to me!  Such a unique insight into the aging process is pretty rare, so take advantage while you can.

Rhetoric is available in limited quantities at both shops for $109.99.  Cheers!

New Arrivals: 5 New Signatory Single Malt Scotch Casks!

Hey All,

Happy to announce the arrival of some very well selected single malt Scotch casks from Signatory. Not only did these whiskies blow me away from a flavor profile stand point, but they’re also some of the more sought after distilleries in Scotland: Laphroaig, Highland Park, Caol Ila and Jura. You have to be careful when buying from independent bottlers, fortunately these guys know what they’re doing, offering bottlings without caramel coloring, chill filtration or dilution (cask strength). You would never find a 24 year peated Jura, 17 year Caol Ila or a 15 year sherry cask aged Laphroaig without producers like Signatory.

New In:

-Signatory Cask Strength Collection: Jura 1989′ Heavily Peated 24 year single malt $199.99
-Signatory Cask Strength Collection: Laphroaig 1996′ Peated 17 year single malt $249.99
-Signatory Cask Strength Collection: Highland Park 1988′ 25 year single malt $299.99
-Signatory Vintage Un-Chillfiltered Collection: Caol Ila Peated 17 year single malt $139.99
-Signatory Vintage Un-Chillfiltered Collection: Laphroaig Peated 15 year single malt (sherry cask) $129.99

Again these Scotches are epic! Talk about a great gift or treat to yourself, especially if you’re a fan of one of the four mentioned distilleries. Since they’re one time only single casks, when they’re gone they’re gone, so get em while you can. Cheers

New Arrivals: Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey

Hey All,

It’s been a long time coming, waiting for Stranahan’s whiskey to come back after it was pulled from the California market almost 5 years ago. The company got to big to fast, and like so many large distilleries today they decided that pulling product from their largest market (California), would allow them to keep up with demand locally in Colorado and their surrounding states. It’s a disturbing trend, one that seems to put a bullseye on California for selling the most whiskey in the country. I guess it is what it is.

But fortunately Stranahan’s is back, rightfully taking its place as one of the first micro-distilled single malts in the US. The flavor profile is grainy, with some well developed notes of honey, buttered rolls, cereal grains and florals. The flavor profile is soft and round with a very delicate assertion of oak. Very similar to how I remember it tasting all those years ago. Not sure if the legendary “Snowflake” will ever make it back to the bay area, that’s their red wine finished version, but I would highly recommend seeking that out if you can ever get your hands on it (currently only sold at the distillery). For now the regular Stranahan’s is available @ both shops! Cheers

New Arrivals: Four Roses Limited 2014 Single Barrel and Elijah Craig Barrel Proof

Hey All,

Happy to announce the arrival of these two highly anticipated bourbons. While we’re grateful for what we’re given, the allocations on Four Roses products are getting smaller and smaller with each release. While I’d love to give you some in depth tasting notes here, since we only got 3 bottles of each, I can’t in good consciences eliminate 33% of the supply. You guys, our loyal following, are way to important for that. These will probably sell out in a matter of minutes, first come first serve, limit one bottle per customer.

While club members can call in to reserve, I also put a side one bottle of each for in store sale only so everyone has a shot. Apologies in advance if you’re not able to get one. Good luck!

New Ardbeg Auriverdes Release and Special Ardbeg Day Discounts!

Hey All,

Happy to announce the arrival of the new Ardbeg Day release: Auriverdes! Just in time for the official international Ardbeg Day celebration this Saturday 5/31/2014. The latest release is aged in bourbon barrels that have had the barrel heads toasted. This extra toasting step brings out some really elegant vanilla and hazelnut notes, similar to a buttery chardonnay which would be aged in toasted barrels (instead of charred barrels like bourbon). I also get some intense earthy-smokey notes up front that lead into flavors of toasted coconut, honey, custard and crushed minerals, finishing with just a touch of phenolic heat. Epic stuff, with a little more oak and mouthfeel than the last few Ardbeg releases I can remember.

As a bonus offering the entire Ardbeg line will be on sale for 10% off, 15% for Club Members, Friday and Saturday only in honor of Ardbeg Day! Ardbeg Auriverdes and discounts available at both shops. Come and get it. Cheers

New Arrival: Michter’s 10yr Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey

Hey hey hey,

Just got in a very very limited amount of the Michter’s 10 year old rye.  Previous releases have been rumored to come from sources that have gone into such ryes as Sazerac 18, Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye, and the Black Maple Hill ryes, although like with any Michter’s product, there’s no way to know for sure where the juice is coming from with this particular batch.  As always, Michter’s tends to exceed their age statements, so this whiskey could very well be over 10 years old.  We haven’t seen this release for a couple years now, and supplies are extremely limited, so act fast!

New Arrivals: Barterhouse 20 year and Old Blowhard 26 year bourbons!

Hey All,

Happy to announce the arrival of the highly anticipated Barterhouse 20 year and Old Blowhard 26 year. I got a chance to try these both at a seminar about a month ago and they did not disappoint. The Barterhouse was as soft and lush as they come with some beautiful honey undertones and a touch of florals. Blowhard showed every bit of its 26 year aging with some pronounced woodsy-barrel char flavors complimented by rye spice, burnt caramel and earth. Both were epic and in extremely limited supply. Here’s the pricing:

-Barterhouse 20 Year Bourbon $89.99
-Old Blowhard 26 Year Bourbon $179.99

Available now @ Both Shops! These will definitely go fast, so don’t sleep. Good luck!

New Arrival: Balcones Texas Single Malt

Hey Ya’ll,
Our friend Chip Tate has dropped another batch of his Texas Single Malt on our collective behinds.  How good is this whiskey you ask?  London’s Wizards of Whiskey recently named it not just the best single malt of the year, but the best world whiskey as well!  Who are we to disagree with a bunch of wizards!?  Still not convinced?  Our own Nate Breed could hardly contain his excitement the last time a batch showed up on our doorstep, calling it, “everything I never knew a single malt could be.”  Unfortunately each store only received a few bottles, so act fast!
